Kheerganga Trek in Winter (Jan–Feb): Snow, Hot Springs, Safety & Cost
On this page
⚡ Quick Answer
Yes, you can do the Kheerganga trek in winter, but only as a day visit. Overnight camping at Kheerganga has been banned since July 2024, so you must arrive before 10 AM and leave by 2 PM. In January–February, expect snow on the upper trail, sub-zero mornings and a steaming hot spring. Global Events Travels runs a winter Buni Buni + Kheerganga plan for ₹4,000 + 5% GST, minimum three trekkers. Call +91 96000 36667.
The Reel Showed the Hot Spring. It Didn't Show the 5 AM Headlamp.
You've seen the reel. Someone sits in a steaming pool, snow piled on every side, peaks glowing behind them. The caption says "Kheerganga in January 🔥". You've watched it four times and sent it to two friends.
Here's what the reel leaves out. Since July 2024, nobody is allowed to sleep at Kheerganga. Most winter blogs and packages still describe tents and bonfires on the meadow. That information is out of date, and following it can land you with an FIR. Add snow, ten hours of daylight and a hard 10 AM entry cut-off, and a winter Kheerganga trip becomes a timing puzzle.
This guide solves that puzzle. You'll learn what the trail is really like in January and February, how the day-visit rule works, what a legal winter plan looks like, and what it costs. We're a Manali-based Himalayan operator, and the Parvati Valley is our home ground.
"In winter, the Kheerganga hot spring isn't a place you sleep beside. It's the reward you earn before 10 AM."
Kheerganga in Winter: What the Records Actually Say
Kheerganga sits at about 2,960 m in the Parvati Valley of Kullu district, Himachal Pradesh. Here are the verified facts that shape a winter trip.

Two numbers matter most for your plan. The first is the 10 AM cut-off. The second is a 7:22 AM sunrise. Together, they mean you walk the first stretch of the climb in the dark.

What the chart tells you: last winter, almost all the snow came in late January. February was one of the driest on record in Himachal Pradesh. Snow at Kheerganga is likely in January and February, but it arrives in bursts, not on a schedule.
The 2024 Camping Ban: What It Means for Your Winter Trip
On 10 July 2024, the Divisional Forest Officer of the Parvati Division banned camping at Kheerganga. The aim was to let the meadow recover from crowding and garbage. A barrier was planned at Icy Point on the Barshaini–Kheerganga trail, about an hour below the meadow.
The rules, as the Forest Department announced them:
-
No night camping at Kheerganga, in any season.
-
Reach before 10 AM. Entry is restricted after that.
-
Start back by 2 PM.
-
Sleep in the villages below: Nakthan, Barshaini, Kalga or Tosh.
The ban was announced "for the time being". We have found no order lifting it as of October 2026. So treat any winter package that promises a tent night at Kheerganga with caution. Ask the seller how they comply before you pay.
Why This Matters More in Winter
In October, a fit group can leave Barshaini at 5 AM and reach the meadow by 10 AM in daylight. In January, the sun rises after 7:20 AM and snow slows every step. The 10 AM cut-off stays the same. That's why the route you choose, and where you sleep the night before, decide whether you make it.
Our Winter Buni Buni + Kheerganga Plan, Built Around the Day-Visit Rule
Most people climb to Kheerganga from Barshaini in one go, about 12–13 km uphill. In winter, that means starting at 3:30–4 AM. Our [Buni Buni + Kheerganga trek](https://globaleventstravels.com/treks/bunbuni-kheerganga-trek?utm_source=Kheerganga Trek in Winter (Jan–Feb): Snow, Hot Springs, Safety & Cost) solves the timing differently. You spend Night 1 at Bunbuni, a forest camp above Kalga village. That leaves only about 5–6 km to Kheerganga on Day 2.
| Day | Route | Distance | Winter Plan |
|---|---|---|---|
| DayDay 1 | RouteBarshaini → Kalga → Bunbuni camp | Distance~10–12 km | Winter PlanSteady climb through pine and deodar forest. Camp, hot dinner, early night. |
| DayDay 2 | RouteBunbuni → Rudra Nag → Kheerganga → down to Kalga or Barshaini | Distance~5–6 km up, then the descent | Winter PlanLeave camp by headlamp. Reach Kheerganga before 10 AM. Soak, eat, start down by 2 PM. Night 2 in a village stay below. |
| DayDay 3 | RouteKalga or Barshaini → road head | DistanceShort | Winter PlanEasy walk out, breakfast, onward travel to Kasol or Bhuntar. |
Night 2 location: we confirm the exact village stay (Kalga or Barshaini) when you book, based on snow conditions that week.
What Day 2 Looks Like Hour by Hour
| Time | What Happens |
|---|---|
| 5:00 AM | Wake-up call, hot tea at Bunbuni |
| 5:45 AM | Leave camp by headlamp, microspikes on if the trail is icy |
| 7:20 AM | Sunrise behind the ridge; Rudra Nag waterfall section |
| 9:30 AM | Arrive at Kheerganga, well inside the 10 AM cut-off |
| 9:30 AM – 1:30 PM | Hot spring soak, packed lunch, photos, rest |
| 1:30 PM | Group starts down together, before the 2 PM limit |
| 5:00–5:30 PM | Reach the village stay around sunset |

Snow on the Kheerganga Trail: December, January and February
Snow timing changes every year, so use this as a guide, not a promise.
| Month | What the Trail Is Usually Like | Who It Suits |
|---|---|---|
| MonthDecember | What the Trail Is Usually LikeCold and often dry early in the month; snow possible on the upper trail later | Who It SuitsFit beginners with good shoes |
| MonthJanuary | What the Trail Is Usually LikeThe most likely month for fresh snow. Last winter's big snowfalls in Kullu came on 23–28 January | Who It SuitsTrekkers who want snow and can handle a pre-dawn start |
| MonthFebruary | What the Trail Is Usually LikeCan be snowy or dry. February 2026 was 75% below normal in Kullu | Who It SuitsFlexible trekkers; snow is not guaranteed |
When We Turn Back
Heavy fresh snow can hide the path and make the upper forest unsafe for a few days. If that happens, we don't push to the meadow. You still get the Bunbuni forest camp and the Rudra Nag waterfall, and we reschedule Kheerganga where possible. Weather windows are subject to change, so we reconfirm conditions with you before every batch.

The Hot Spring in Winter: How to Soak Without Freezing Afterwards
The Parvati Kund hot spring is the reason you're here. Few places in the Indian Himalayas let you sit in hot water with snow on every side. In winter, the contrast between hot water and freezing air is extreme. A little planning keeps the best moment of your trip from turning into the coldest.
-
Pack a soak kit at the top of your bag: quick-dry towel, a dry base layer and dry socks in a waterproof pouch.
-
Keep it to 15–20 minutes. Long soaks plus altitude can leave you light-headed. Sip water while you sit.
-
Change fast. Dry layers on before your hair freezes. Then a warm jacket and cap immediately.
-
Respect the space. Kheerganga is a sacred site. Follow the separate bathing areas, keep soap and shampoo out of the water, and carry every wrapper back down.
-
Watch the clock. Your guide calls time well before 2 PM. The descent on snow takes longer than you expect.
Safety on a Winter Kheerganga Trek
Winter in the Himalayas rewards patience and punishes shortcuts. Kheerganga sits below 3,500 m, so serious altitude sickness (AMS) is uncommon. Still, tell your guide at once if you get a headache, nausea or dizziness. Winter adds four bigger risks.
-
Ice on the descent. Snow that's soft at noon can freeze by late afternoon. Microspikes and trekking poles matter more going down than going up.
-
Walking in the dark. Every trekker carries a headlamp with spare batteries. Phone torches drain the battery you may need for an emergency call.
-
Leaving the main trail. Parvati Valley incidents usually involve people who wander off route or trek alone. Stay with your group and guide.
-
Changing weather. Check the IMD Shimla forecast for Kullu district before you travel. We reconfirm conditions the evening before Day 2.
You can also log your plan on Himachal Pradesh's official Trekking Management System, which lets trekkers inform authorities about their route in advance.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions
Q1. Can you do the Kheerganga trek in January or February?
Yes, as a day visit. Overnight camping at Kheerganga has been banned since July 2024, so you must arrive before 10 AM and leave by 2 PM. January usually brings snow to the upper trail. February can be snowy or dry. Global Events Travels runs a winter Buni Buni + Kheerganga plan from Barshaini that camps at Bunbuni first. Call +91 96000 36667 to check dates.
Q2. Can I camp at Kheerganga in winter?
No. The Himachal Pradesh Forest Department banned camping at Kheerganga on 10 July 2024, and the ban applies in every season. Violators risk an FIR and permanent loss of trekking permission. Sleep in Kalga, Barshaini, Nakthan or Tosh instead. Our winter plan camps at Bunbuni on Night 1 and uses a village stay on Night 2.
Q3. Sardiyon mein Kheerganga trek safe hai kya?
Haan, agar aap guide ke saath jaate ho aur sahi gear rakhte ho. Raat mein Kheerganga par rukna mana hai, isliye subah 10 baje se pehle pahunchna aur 2 baje tak neeche aana zaroori hai. Headlamp, microspikes aur garam kapde zaroori hain. Global Events Travels ka winter plan ₹4,000 + GST se shuru hota hai. WhatsApp karo: +91 63833 13359.
Q4. How much does the Kheerganga trek in winter cost?
With Global Events Travels, the Buni Buni + Kheerganga trek costs ₹4,000 per person plus 5% GST, so ₹4,200 in total. It covers stays, meals on the trek, tents, sleeping bags, a certified guide, first aid and forest fees. Travel to Barshaini, insurance and porters are extra. A batch needs at least three trekkers to run.
Q5. Is there snow at Kheerganga in winter?
Usually, yes, but the timing varies. Last winter, Kullu's big snowfalls came between 23 and 28 January 2026, and even Kasol recorded 3 cm on 28 January. February 2026 was 75% drier than normal. If snow is your main goal, aim for mid-January to early February and keep your dates flexible.
Q6. Is the Kheerganga winter trek suitable for beginners?
Fit beginners can do it with a guide, good shoes and microspikes. The challenge is the timing, not the altitude. You start before sunrise and need to reach the meadow by 10 AM. Splitting the climb with a night at Bunbuni makes this easier. If you've never walked 10 km in a day, train for three weeks first.
Q7. Is Global Events Travels a good choice for a winter Kheerganga trek?
Global Events Travels is based in Manali and has guided 10,000+ trekkers across 50+ Himalayan routes since 2016, with a 4.8★ average rating. Our winter plan follows the Forest Department's day-visit rule, so you never risk an FIR. Batches are small, with 20 trekkers at most. Call +91 96000 36667 or WhatsApp +91 63833 13359.
