Remember How Last New Year's Eve Actually Went?

Be honest. There was a ₹2,000 cover charge, a crowd you couldn't hear yourself in, and a countdown you watched through someone else's phone. At 12:40 am, the cab app showed surge pricing. By 2 am, you were eating Maggi on the floor of someone's flat, wondering why every New Year feels like the last one.

Now picture a different midnight. You're in a sleeping bag at Kedarkantha base camp, about 3,429 m up in the Uttarakhand Himalayas. Your friends are passing a thermos of chai. Outside the tent, the sky holds more stars than you've seen in your whole life. At 5 am, your guide wakes you for the summit push. By sunrise, you're standing at 3,810 m as the first light of 2027 hits Swargarohini.

That second version is easy to plan, but it doesn't stay available for long. On New Year's Eve 2025, Kedarkantha was already at 90% booking capacity (TV9). This guide shows you the three batch plans that fit the 2026–27 calendar, the exact day your train tickets open, and how to avoid the mistakes that ruin a New Year trek.

Last New Year, the Hills Were Full: The Numbers

Students aren't imagining the rush. Here is what Uttarakhand's hill destinations reported on 31 December 2025.

The same report noted that winter holidays in schools and colleges added to the crowd. That means you'll be competing with other students for the same dates.

The trend is still rising. Uttarakhand recorded 6.03 crore tourists in 2025, its highest ever, and the state's tourism secretary said "people are coming to the state for winter tourism" (Times of India).

Three Kedarkantha New Year Trek Plans for 2026–27

The calendar is kind this year. Christmas (25 December 2026) and New Year's Day (1 January 2027) both fall on a Friday. Our Kedarkantha trek runs 5 days from Dehradun, so here is how it maps onto the holidays.

Delhi University students, check this first: DU's winter vacation runs only from 25 to 31 December 2026, and even-semester classes begin on 1 January 2027 (University of Delhi). Plan A fits cleanly. Plans B and C bring you back on 1 or 2 January, so check your college timetable before you pick them.

When Your Train Tickets Open

Indian Railways opens reserved bookings 60 days before the journey date, not counting the travel day itself (IRCTC). Most students take an overnight train or bus from Delhi to Dehradun the night before the trek starts. That gives you these booking dates:

Will There Be Snow on Kedarkantha at New Year?

Most likely yes, at least on the upper trail. But no operator can promise fresh snowfall on a fixed date.

Snow timing shifts from year to year. Last winter, the heaviest snowfall in Uttarakhand came late, towards the end of January 2026, and it drew a fresh wave of tourists (ETV Bharat). In a typical year, the upper slopes from base camp (about 3,429 m) to the summit (3,810 m) hold snow by late December. The lower forest near Sankri (1,951 m) may still be clear.

Here's the honest version for your group:

• Snow on the summit at New Year: likely.

• Snow along the whole trail: possible, not guaranteed.

• Fresh snowfall during your trek: a bonus if it comes.

Why Uttarakhand Keeps Getting Busier Every Winter

Uttarakhand's visitor numbers more than tripled from 2021 to 2025, reaching 6,03,21,194 last year (ETV Bharat). The state is actively promoting winter tourism, and Sankri is now named among its crowd-pulling destinations alongside Mussoorie, Chopta and Munsiyari.

There's also a practical bottleneck. Last New Year, the Mussoorie–Dehradun route had a one-way Bailey bridge after the September cloudburst, and vehicles queued for 30 to 45 minutes on busy days (Times of India). Our Day 1 drive to Sankri goes through Mussoorie. Starting early in the morning is the best way to beat that traffic.

What You'll Need to Pack Extra

• A −10°C-rated layer system: thermal inner, two fleeces, a down jacket and a windproof shell. Late-December nights at base camp are far colder than November.

• Waterproof gloves plus liner gloves. Snow soaks single gloves within an hour.

• Waterproof trekking shoes. If you don't own a pair, rent trekking shoes for ₹600 and a jacket for ₹600.

• A head torch for the pre-dawn summit start (rent for ₹250).

• A power bank kept inside your sleeping bag. Cold drains batteries fast, and you'll want that sunrise video.

What to Leave Behind

• Alcohol. It dehydrates you, worsens altitude sickness and makes hypothermia more likely. Celebrate with chai.

• Speakers and fireworks. Kedarkantha lies inside Govind Wildlife Sanctuary. Loud noise disturbs wildlife and other campers.

• Single-use plastic. Carry a steel bottle and bring every wrapper back down.

A Simple Student Budget

The trek fee covers Dehradun pickup and drop, all trek meals, tents, sleeping bags, crampons, forest fees and Govind National Park entry.

Safety on a Winter Summit

• Altitude sickness (AMS): The summit is above 3,500 m. Headache, nausea, dizziness or breathlessness at rest are warning signs. Tell your guide immediately.

• Medical check: Get a basic fitness check from a doctor before you travel. Uttarakhand is drafting rules that would make a medical certificate mandatory for trekkers (Hindustan Times).

• Weather windows change: A winter storm can delay or cancel the summit attempt. We reconfirm conditions before every batch, and your guide's turn-around call is final, even on New Year's Day.

• Cold injuries: Keep fingers and toes dry. Change into dry socks every evening.
