Manali, situated towards the lower end of the valley, is one of the biggest tourist attraction in Himachal Pradesh and one of the best holiday destinations in the world. Just hearing the name “Manali” paints a picture of waterfall, song birds, forest land, apple orchards and snow clad glaciated mountains. Additionally, Manali is at the beginning of an ancient trade route that traverses the Rohtang and Baralacha passes, weaves through Lahul and Ladakh, and eventually leads to Kashmir. A branch road also connects Manali with the far-off Spiti region.
Currently, motorable roads have been built extending all the way to Kaza in Lahul and Spiti, Leh in Jammu and Kashmir, and even to the Pangi valley in Chamba. Consequently, Manali becomes a convenient starting point in the summer for regular bus services to these offbeat locations. It is located about 45 km from Kullu, which makes it accessible. It is also a gateway for treks such as the Beas Kund trek, which begins here and is perfect for those looking for short but picturesque experiences of the Himalayas.
Manali also has a fascinating legend behind it. Manu Samhita, and this is the place where Manu got landed on Earth after the great deluge. In other words, this site was the landing site of his divine boat after the flood. Thus, the place was called “Manu-Alaya,” which translates to “the abode of Manu.” This name evolved into the Manali of today. The village has a temple dedicated to the sage Manu who is said to have brought this ancient practice to the World and has been preserved till today.
Later, stroll through the energetic Mall Road, populated with quaint cafes, local handicraft shops, and numerous street food stalls. Have a hot dinner and retire to your hotel for the night as you prepare for the Beas Kund trekking adventure.
Post breakfast, we board our vehicle and proceed toward Dhundi while traversing the famous adventure destination Solang Nala. An hour’s drive from Manali brings us to Dhundi, which serves as the official starting point of the Beas Kund trek. Moreover, Solang is known as a hub for adventure activities and marks the entry point for many Beas Kund trek packages.
The picturesque route from Solang to the village of Dhundi traces the right bank (north) of the river and winds through dense forests of pines, walnut, and silver birch trees. As an example, this 8 km trek to Beas Kund from Solang to Dhundi is an excellent way to get used to the mountains. Once we arrive to Dhundi we start hiking.
The trail from Dhundi moves upstream along the river in a gentle and picturesque manner until we reach Bakarthach, which lies about 5 km ahead. That is to say, this portion of the Beas Kund trekking route is relatively easy and beginner-friendly. The trail gradually ascends along the left of the Seven Sisters peak and leads you through the serene Bakarthach meadows. Above all, this stretch offers a great acclimatization opportunity and suits most fitness levels, making it ideal for those concerned about the Beas Kund trek difficulty level.
Further ahead, as we get closer to the Bakarthach campsite, trekkers are treated with views of Deo Tibba (6,001 m) and Indrasan Peak (6,220 m), two of the classical Himalayan peaks. Undoubtedly, these views contribute to the unforgettable experiences on this stretch, and dictate the personality of the rest of the Beas Kund trek length! The trail makes for a glorious introduction to the whim and majesty of the Himalayas, especially in April, when you’re doing the Beas Kund trek and the valley is fresh and snow lies in patches.
Today we set off after breakfast and start making our way up to reach the final point of the Beas Kund trek. The trail includes a short stretch of walking over stones and rocky ground. However, the challenge is short-lived, and soon we come across the serene alpine lake known as Beas Kund, believed to be the origin of the River Beas. That is to say, this spot holds both geographical and spiritual significance.
Aside from this lake, there are multiple breathtaking mountains(Mount Shitidhar, Ladakh, Friendship Peak) which this place acts as the base camp for loading places along with the place itself being a major hub for high-altitude expeditions. Experienced trekkers can summit these who start from Beas Kund in the early hours. Shikhar Beh and Makerbeh peak soar over 6000 meters and can rule the views around the Beas Kund trek height of around 3700 meters.
To clarify, the Lahaul Valley lies to the north of Beas Kund, hidden just beyond the towering ridgeline of these mountains. Meanwhile, to the west lies Kangra, and further below, the majestic Dhauladhar range begins to unfold—offering rich contrasts in terrain that highlight the appeal of Beas Kund trekking.
After that we spend some time to visit the Beas Kund area, relish the peace and take some snaps of the enchanting surroundings. After this fulfilling tour, we backtrack in our steps and head back to the Bakarthach camp for an overnight stay; concluding one of the most rewarding days on the Beas Kund trek
Today, after breakfast, we will depart from Bakarthach and begin our descent toward Dhundi, the point where we had started our Beas Kund trek on the very first day. Consequently, this return journey brings a sense of accomplishment as we retrace our steps through the scenic trails of the Beas Kund trekking route.
Meanwhile, the trail allows for one last time to take in the surrounding peaks and meadows. Getting into adventure sports like quad biking, paragliding and more in Solang Nala is also ideal around this time. For example, Solang is a popular stop included in many Beas Kund trek packages for adventure lovers.
After that, We spend a couple of hours enjoying in the excitement of Solang and return to Manali. To sum up, the last leg of this unforgettable Beas Kund trek experience concludes here, refreshing in the lap of Himalayas.
